![]() ![]() That’s when Ellis shows up: a famous (teen) author who is writing about the Dalloway murders and pulls Felicity in to her research. This time, she’s determined to set aside the attraction to witchcraft and concentrate on her studies. At the time, she’d been obsessed with Dalloway House’s history, with its murders and rumors of witchcraft. ![]() Last year, her girlfriend died in a tragic accident. This is a dark academia YA novel about Felicity, who has come back to her exclusive/pretentious boarding school after taking a leave to take care of her mental health. Likely if I hadn’t have had that gap in between, I would have enjoyed it more. I also started listening to this in October, when I love reading horror and thrillers, but it expired when I was halfway through and I finished in about a month later. ![]() So while I didn’t enjoy this read as a whole, that’s down to my own choices. I went into it looking for a creepy, unsettling read and then finished feeling unnerved and unhappy about feeling that way. I feel a little “ dead dove, do not eat” about this reading experience. ![]()

![]() I recognized that my fast thinking was attributed to the fact that I was busy all the time and didn't incorporate very many breaks into my schedule. However, in situations when we don't have those – like when we feel tired or stressed - System 1 impulsively takes over, coloring our judgment. Since thinking slow requires conscious effort, System 2 is best activated when we have self-control, concentration, and focus. Meanwhile, System 2 uses problem-solving and concentration – we use it to think slowly, like when we calculate a math problem or fill out our tax returns. ![]() ![]() System 1 operates intuitively and automatically – we use it to think fast, like when we drive a car or recall our age in conversation. One of the book's main ideas is to showcase how the brain uses these two systems for thinking and decision-making processes. ![]() Sometimes we think fast and sometimes we think slow. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tough times call for tough picture books. It's no surprise that the dominant color of the spreads is black. So it came as no surprise to us when author/illustrator Jon Klassens witty. This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen - 9780763655990 We use cookies to give you the best possible experience. ![]() So I am not worried about that." The spread tells another story the crab betrays the small fish in a heartbeat, pointing to its hiding place, "where the plants are big and tall and close together." Readers hope for the best, but after the big fish darts in, only one of them emerges, sporting the hat. This Is Not My Hat type Book In December, we named This Is Not My Hat one of the 10 Great Kids Books of 2012. This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen, 9780763655990, available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide. "But he said he wouldn't tell anyone which way I went. "There is someone who saw me already," admits the little fish, about a goggle-eyed crab. Klassen excels at using pictures to tell the parts of the story his unreliable narrators omit or evade. It's a small gray fish who has stolen a tiny bowler hat from a much larger fish ("It was too small for him anyway," the little fish sniffs. Like Klassen's very funny and much-praised I Want My Hat Back, this story involves a hat theft this time, Klassen ups the ante by having the thief narrate. ![]() ![]() ![]() The POV alternates between male and female so you have great insight into both sides of the story. Elle’s done these properly they’re well-structured, slick from good editing and have great covers.Įach book is charmingly unique given they all have the same underlying structure – ice hockey stud meets his match that makes the faithful life win out over multiple hook ups. ![]() Also, I’ve read (or attempted to read) too many badly or not-at-all edited self-published novels. As far as I’m concerned, a romance is not a romance without sex scenes and Elle definitely delivers here. ![]() These are laugh out loud funny in places but also sweet and poignant. The extremely appealing fit, sexy, male bodies the sport gives them is also a definite win. ![]() Don’t be put off by the ice hockey storyline – as a Brit I know absolutely nothing about ice hockey and am totally disinterested in most sports – but Elle doesn’t overdo it with the sport descriptions and I even learnt something. The Deal, The Mistake, The Score and The Goal follow four (male) college ice hockey players as they find their Happy Ever Afters. Overview review of Off-Campus series – contains minor spoilers. ![]() ![]() Then she is told her and other refugees are gonna be wandfasted which is where you are put together with a mate. Tropic of Cancer (1970) (out of 4) Good art film has American writer Henry Miller (Rip Torn) traveling through Paris trying to score as much free food and sex that he can get. When it was first published in the US in 1961, it led to more than 60 obscenity trials until a historic ruling by the Supreme Court defined it as a work of literature. Banned in the US and the UK for more than thirty years because it was considered pornographic, Tropic of Cancer continued to be distributed in France and smuggled into other countries. ![]() Set in Paris in the 1930s, it features a starving American writer who lives a bohemian life among prostitutes, pimps, and artists.
